Patch scan failed (Unknown error - check WindowsUpdate.log)

  • I've been seeing this more frequently lately. The few times I've looked into it, it appeared to be a problem with the windows update engine on the PC... manually running the windows/microsoft update in the web browser seems to have fixed it.

    My question is, has anyone else had similar issues, and has anyone figured out an automated way to fix it?

  • I had a big issue today. Patches were not going through but I wasn't getting any failure notices. The patches were just sitting in the Pending status.

    I updated KB890830, then I had to reset all the credentials, then retest all the machines. The patches started going through.
