Removing Symantec and Switching to Kaseya Security

  • We will be deploying Kaseya on a client with approximately 60 computers. Symantec is currently loaded on the network and on each workstation. We are looking for the easiest way to uninstall the application from all machines and install Kaseya security instead. Any suggestions? Would anyone like to share a script if one has been created?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

  • There is a script posted by me in the "Scripts" section showing how to use "nonav" quietly to remove all traces of Symantec AntiVirus. I would recommend the manual method on the server, though...

  • Proceed with caution...

We just did the same with a client running Endpoint Security 11 - what a NIGHTMARE.

Some systems removed fine, other systems were crippled by any removal method, this version of symantec is just bad software IMHO.

On 20% of the machines, the dialup network was left crippled, which disabled the users Verizon Access cards (very mobile construction company.) We never found a fix, but rolled the machines back, and left the symantec services disabled. Removal by any method on these machines led to the same problems.

I've really grown a disdain for Symantec over the last few versions...

  • Yes, be careful.

We experienced the same in all of our inhouse testing. We would find most removed but not all of Symantec. Some items would be turned off, but not removed. Finally decided to manually uninstall on this 60+ workstation customer. Time consuming, yes, but at least I knew when the removal was creating issues.

  • I have been using a script that works fine for all symantec. It just needs to be udpated with the correct version of AV. I also had the dial problem and fixed it by deleting the symantec reg key that was effecting IPSEC. I did a search of the registry to find the key and delete it. I don't remember the key off hand, but you could find it and script the removal of it for all your machines. Below is the script I am using. If you have different versions, just find the corresponding reg key and add it to the script.

    Script Name: Uninstall AV
Script Description: Removes Symantec Versions and reboots
    8.0.0.374
    9.0.0.338
    9.0.210
    10.0.0.0
    10.0.0.359
    10.0.846.0
    10.0.1000.1
    10.1.4000.4
    11.0.1000.1375

Step 1. Removes the restriction for unistalling symantec with a password.
Step 2. Unlocks the the services
Setp 3-?? Uninstalls all versions of Symantec AV

Find the Symantec Endpoint Protection uninstallation product key

Type regedit to edit the product key

    Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
Browse the Uninstallation sub keys (on the left pane) until you find a value DisplayName"="Symantec Endpoint Protection (on the right pane)

    Copy the uninstallation key

Example: For Symantec Endpoint Protection Version 11.0.776.1100 it is 3B98507E-8B81-43EE-A77D-9C3E90EC3E2F
    For Example: MsiExec.exe /X{3B98507E-8B81-43EE-A77D-9C3E90EC3E2F}
