How are patch reboots determined?

  • Hey guys,

How exactly are the patch reboots determined via Kaseya after scheduled patches are executed? Our issue is that upon server patching we would get false patch reboot emails sent and the only way to verify if the server does in fact need a reboot is via checking in the patch status window.

  • Any time Kaseya ATTEMPTS to install an update via patch management it will do the requested a reboot action. Even if all updates fail to install. It's a been discussed here several times. Hopefully, Kaseya will improve this in the V6 release.

  • My biggest pet pieve is multiple prompts to reboot. Somertimes, patch tries to install, and maybe the credentials fail. Reboot prompt, reboot. Log in, patch still shows as missing, and wallah, another reboot prompt. Customers think they have to reboot 3 times for each patch, and then call in if it still doesn't work. Not fun.

  • Let face it the Kaseya patch engine certainly needs improvements. It has the following flaws:

    1. It only returns a patch status of pass/fail and not the result of each individual patch installed.
    2. It forces a reboot even if all patches failed to install.
    3. It doesn't support running more then one file per patch entry.
    4. It always insist on installing service packs first. I've had a couple cases that Office service pack(s) wouldn't install until some other patches were installed first. It would be nice if it would have fixed this situation by itself.
    5. It doesn't log per patch installation failures. It just will attempt to install the same failing patch until someone notices it or the user complains. This could certainly be handled in a better way.
