KB973923 Failing

  • Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB973923) appears to be failing throughout our clients. At some point, Kaseya showed this patch as a Manual Patch, but that is no longer the case.

Was the removal "Manual" Tag intended? Should this patch be able to be installed? Is anyone else having this issue?

  • There's a script in the forum.

    It will apply the patch.

  • I am also having this problem. Patch management shows that KB973923 should be installed automatically.

I downloaded KB973923 from the link provided by the Kaseya console:
    http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/software/secu/2009/07/atl80sp1-kb973923-x86_4d50cba4f1476d9e9320d5c0dc2be56259a98303.exe

I tried to script it, but ran into some issues.

I downloaded KB973923 from the thread provided by tbresse:
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/B/B/6BB661D6-A8AE-4819-B79F-236472F6070C/vcredist_x86.exe

I created the script and succesfully deployed KB973923.

The patch KB973923 file from the thread is different from the patch file link provided by the Kaseya console.

I went ahead and created a ticket with Kaseya (194175) and I am still waiting on them. When they last got back to me, my ticket got escalated to a feature specialist.

  • Per the security bulletin, this vulnerability applies to machines with Visual Studio 2003 and later.

Unless you have agents with this installed, perhaps it would be wise to either deny or not approve this update until Kaseya sort out the issue.

  • Kaseya Support Responded with the following:

Patch shows KB973923 in mixed mode, critical and moderate but MS article shows it as manual install and moderate. The security update is specifically intended for developers of components and controls. It looks like MS did not truly set this patch up right. If this is truly needed then you will need to install manually.

I guess I will go ahead and deploy it with the script specified earlier in this thread.
