Raid/Scsi Hard Drive Testing

  • what are you guys implementing in the field to be notified when a drive fails/dies on a server? is there any software that works all around that you use to detect raid/scsi drives? or do you just wait for it to break?

  • We primarily use Dell servers (I do not believe in white boxes). Dell includes Dell OpenManage software for all of its servers (we prefer SAS drives). We install this, then use event log monitoring to detect any failures... basically the Dell OpenManage App will immediately record to the event log any dell hardware errors. We then use the Dell Event set to monitor for Dell errors and have it alert us immediately.

  • another question. you said you then use the dell event set to monitor for dell errors. where did you find this set of errors or did you compile them together yourself?

  • K actually provides this event set for you. It should already be in there (along with IBM's and HP's).
