Mail Flow - per hour

  • We continually get calls from users especially a week or so after a major email outage demanding we fix their email as "they have not received an email all day and they are waiting on something important"

Only to find out that their is nothing wrong or at least at our end there is nothing wrong.

Is there any way to create a script that will send an alert when email flow goes below ??? of emails per hour so that we can be on top of email problems and have them fixed before the customer is even aware?

  • Have done a similar thing on linux with a bash script, ie 2 hours without emails = check the system. generally i deploy a linux smtp server or proxy to hide my exchange smtp engine from the real world anyway so hasn't been an issue. For exchange perhaps set a trigger metric on one of the exhange monitor sets?

    You can use SMTP counters.
