VMWare monitoring

  • I was on wondering if any knows if there are SNMP monitor sets for VMWare included with K2?

I'ld also be interested to hear the best ways to monitor VMWare using Kaseya - is SNMP the only option, or can you get it to write to event logs?

  • Count me as interested as well. We're doing more VMWare also and really need to monitor those. I think SNMP is going to be the only way to go there, however.

  • As ESX is Linux based it doesn't have Event Logs. There is a comprehensive set of information available via SNMP or Web Services, although the web services are somewhat cumbersome to use.

  • I'm not sure if this is possible but, Microsoft has linux monitoring tool sets (Free) and those write to event logs on the monitoring server (windows). so you could in theory monitor the vmware esx (Linux) with ms linux tool sets and write the to a custom event log and monitor that from Kaseya for your esx boxes. I don't have anything other then a prod vmware and only esxi at that, but If someone were to post a how to or if it won't work, that would be cool.

here's the link to the tool set from Microsoft, I know some of you are in disbelief, I was too when I heard of it. but here it is. I'm going to try and get a test box up for this on linux and will post my results, but I don't have any available vmware installs I can play with so someone else will have to chip in Big Smile

  • The Cross-Platform monitoring from Microsoft is a set of Management Packs for System Center Operations Manager (SCOM). As such they will only work within a SCOM infrastructure and are not generic monitoring that will work with any monitoring tool.

If you are looking for a generic Linux Monitor that integrates with K via SNMP take a look at http://www.linuxmonitor.com/

  • There are 3 SNMP Monitor sets included in K2 for monitoring ESX server and the VM's. I havent had an opportunity to try them yet though.

[edited by: Anonymous at 9:40 AM (GMT -7) on 4-22-2011] I would use VMware sys logs to monitor the server in Kaseya Esxi has SNMP blocked, ESX does not. You can change the location of the syy logs from local to a remote server. The use Kaseya's log parser to monitor ESX and ESXi sys logs on the remote server. Jeff Smith
  • Curious if you ever posted your finding or this did not work for you...
