SNMP set does'nt generate alarm

I finally got working snmp set. I'm monitoring the state of port 24 on an 3Com 4500 switch.
In the log file i see the state of the port eighter up or down.
Now i set the snmp alarm threshold on equal to 1 (down) as i found it on the internet.
When i pull out the cable i can see in the log that the state of the port is down but there's no alarm generated.
I have connected the monitor set to the right switch with the option A.
I also tried it by putting the alarm threshold on 2 but it still does'nt work.
Do i use wrong values or something?
I've tried to solve it this afternoon (4 hours or more) but can't get it to work.
