SQL - ODBC Testing

  • I have an ecommerce system that I need to monitor which the web servers connect via a backbone to a Sql server. Anyone have a way to constantly check to see if this connection gets broken?

This would help me work with India when something fails.

  • Can you monitor the number of connections to the SQL server via a performance monitor statistic?

  • There are lots of possible ways.

You can run an 'external check' from the web server pinging the address of the DB to see if it is available.

You can monitor the connection statistics for the particular DB via something like MSSQL$:General - User connections, or MSSQL$Big Smileatabases - Active Connections - and check if it's greater than 0.

No idea if these will work in your circumstance but it gives some ideas to get you started maybe? I suggest you experiment and test thoroughly.
