Windows Firewall?

  • I know that we have all had issues where we are at a client because they are complaining about slow internet access... And further I know most people monitor Bandwidth for their customers firewalls using SNMP applications like Kaseya or PRTG ;-) So what about blocking something when it is found.. P2P is still a huge issue and if we can block it, maybe that could be a good script to write up for windows firewall.

    Any other methods?

    Any Ideas?

  • We use the application blocker to stop PTP traffic.

I have also used vb scripts to 'amend' the windows firewall but they can be messy.

  • We've stopped trying to use the application blocker because the low-level TCP/IP driver that it installs has caused too many conflicts with other software.

We use firewalls with IPS and content filtering capabilities to block unwanted activities.

Check Computer Policy -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Network -> Network Connections -> Windows Firewall -> Domain Profile -> "Windows Firewall: Define port exceptions"

  • For those needed to manage the Windows Firewall without a group policy or the old workgroup security model. Check out using the netsh command line utility:

    C:\>netsh firewall

    The following commands are available:

    Commands in this context:
    ? - Displays a list of commands.
    add - Adds firewall configuration.
    delete - Deletes firewall configuration.
dump - Displays a configuration script.
help - Displays a list of commands.
reset - Resets firewall configuration to default.
    set - Sets firewall configuration.
    show - Shows firewall configuration.

To view help for a command, type the command, followed by a space, and then
    type ?.

  • FirewallOFF.txt
I've attached a simple script I've made using the netsh command shown below. Works great for us.
