MSP Antivirus & Security Programs

  • We are in the process ov evaluating Trend & F-Secure's MSP programs. Has anyone enrolled in either? It seems that F-Secure has a major leg up over Trend. Any feedback would be appreciated.

  • We personally have not worked with either of these and are trying to work out some sort of MSP option with our current preferred AV vendor which is Kaspersky Labs. We like their product the best out of all the AVs we've used, tested and recommended over the years. The dowside is they don't have anything that can easily integrate into our MSP model at this time.

I think the MSP way of doing business is a paradigm shift for many software vendors and that's why you haven't seen too many of them with specific programs and licensing terms designed around that business model. The trend is definitely moving towards MSP though so it's only a matter of time.

  • Hi,

We have not found a good MSP model for AV is AS issues. We currently use Symantec Corporate Edition (our preferred) for many reasons, despite the high overhead Symantec can generate on the systems. It works. The central console is out point of admin and we recieve alerts (via the VSA) on update failures.

We have looked at Webroot, Trend and Counterspy and will look at eEye soon. So far, Counterspy has better management features for enterprise management.

We do not favor any app that is based on open source code and primarily prefer products that are atlease 3 revs old.

    Just food for thought

  • We are currently using AVG and we have it reporting through the internet to our AVG Admin console server running in our office.

We also use Webroot Enterprise in the same way. It reports back automatically to our server through the internet.

We just need to get the logs out of the two consoles and into Kaseya.

    Hope that helps.

Hands down Trend seems to find more viruses than any other product that we have ever used. We only resell Trend Micro to our clients. Every facility that we have gone into which uses Symantec or any other product we always find viruses during scans. Granted nothing is perfect but we have had extremely awesome results with Trend.

  • Is anyone including AV or Spyware software in their customer offerings? I think this would be a valuable component to the managed service however from reading the posts i havent come to a conclusion if anyone is actually doing this or going into a customer and just managing the definitions of the existing AV the client has licensed. I am concerned that with most licensing programs from the major companies (symantec, trend, etc) wont allow "rental" which is basically what we would be doing in an MSP model.

Has anyone found a quality product or MSP program from a vendor to accomplish this. I see F-Secure mentioned in this thread on one hand and then the other complaints about the software.

    Thanks for your input.

  • Ryan,

We thought about it in the beginning, but outside of the rental issue we came across a couple other issues.

    1. Just include it in the price, increasing the overall pricing to include the a/v... This posed a problem of "if" they outed from the package part way through, you might not recuperate the cost of the a/v package.

    2. Offer a premium plus package: This would include a complete lease of products, including all software. Pro's andCon's, kind of like #1. Most leasing companies won't allow IT services/labor to be included, at least what I've seen over the years, but if you could find one that would, outsource a lease package. Of course this is expensive overall and prob won't fit most clients.

Our MSP model basically requires the client to havethe product, and to have maint renewals for anything that would require it; i.e.: firewalls, servers, A/V, ect.

This allows usfrontline support with updates, ect. So far this has worked the best for us.

I'd love to hear what others are doing.

  • We are providing Symantec Client Secutity 3.1 to all of our clients who sign up. My reasoning is that we have deployed it many times, so it's cookie-cutter at this point. If the cost of the product is $50/ seat and it saves us 30 minutes on-site over the course of the 1 year contract, it's a small price to pay. You lose more than that if you sit in front of one machine to remove a piece of spyware.

  • Couple of things.....

Leasing company's will generally not provide funding for labor in leases, as PITGhas mentioned. There is no tangible asset for them to recover in the event they have to pull the lease early.

However, Citi Corp will bundle labor (100%) in on leasing with product. Generally, they are $1.00 buy out leases, which customers prefer. We generally will do a project (materials and labor) and Citi will do the lease. They will either pay you direct and you pay the vendor, or they will pay the vendor and cut you a check for the profits on the materials + the labor cost. PLUS you get some additional back end money for doing the lease. Something you may want to check out. Works out very well.

Also, Symantec Anti-virus Corporate Edition requires a minimum of 10 licenses. The management console (A piece they purchased from LanDesk) helps manage all the clients on the network. The concept of leasing seems to be more hassle than what it is worth. All our clients run SAV and have had positive results for the past 8 years. Yes, there is a hick up here and there, but, that is to be expected with anything made by man. The retails stuff of Symantec is something we do not deal with, as it provides too much trouble. So we will sell the SAV corporate, but not the bundled product they have with the firewall, anti-virus, etc as it haspresented problems in the past.

    Hope this helps....

  • Hi

Symantec has a 5 user boxed version of SAV Corporate Edition and a version that includes the Exchange agent. I beleive that it is labeled Small Business Edition and the one that has Exchange has with GroupWare on it.

Studebaker-Worthington will also do softs costs, labor and software, in leases.

  • FWIW:

We have struck a deal with McAfee to provide their Total Protection for Small Business software for $3.95/month per system on a month-to-month basis (usually sold in 1 or 2-year subscriptions, but we begged and begged). Total Protection incldues McAfee antivirus, antispyware andcentrally managed firewall.

There isKaseya scriptavailable to remotely deploy the software.

Unfortuneately, no free trial available (yet - still begging) but the minmum purchase is 1 seat so you can try it for a month for less than $5. Then just buy the number of seats you need as you need them (or don't need them). Just sign up for the free trial and then purchase the McAfee subscription(s).
