Planning to use Microsoft Security Essentials?

  • Gentlemen,

Is anyone here planning to use Microsoft Security Essentials? I know it's in Beta right now, but I wanted to gauge support for this product. Note: I did not post this in KES because this post is about another product.

    http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Here the good and bad as I see it now:

    Good:

    1. Free (supposedly)
    2. Catches most viruses/spyware (from reviews I've read)
    3. Should be easy to roll out

    Bad:

    1. Not supported under Kaseya's UI
    2. No centralized monitoring point (Unlike KES or TrendMicro)

Anyone testing it now under Kaseya?
What is your timeframe for rollout?
What are your experiences with it?

Don't get me wrong, I really like the ease of KES, which is why I use it currently. What are your thoughts?

  • I haven't tried this as the beat is not available in Australia. However, my understatning is that it is free for home users only (as is AVG).

Not yet, no. We plan on implementing scripts and monitors to support it, but we haven't gotten around it setting up a lab environment to test it out yet.

  • Like Windows Defender, this product is not really suited to the business customer.

No centralised management should be enough to dissuade you.

KES pricing has come down quite a bit.

Talk to your Kaseya rep, you might be surprised. There also was an offer for 25 free KES seats for those who don't already have KES.

  • smb,

After my original post, I read about the KES price reduction. As I told my rep, we will likely transition my clients to KES over the next two years as their current AV expires.

    Thanks,

  • as far as the product itself goes, im quite impressed with it.

it seems to have been very good at cleaning an infected machine, detecting any new viruses, scanning, and its memory footprint seems good.

overtaken avast free for my liking in the free av stakes

  • For home users it is fine, but Microsoft wants you to use Forefront Client Security for businesses...

"You may install and use any number of copies of the software on your devices in your household for use by people who reside there or for use in your home-based small business"
