VERY slow patching in R8

  • According to WindowsUpdate.log, some servers we're patching have a 40 minute gap between downloading their next patch.  These are mostly 2008 R2 servers, some are brand new, some are ones we inherited that haven't been patched in a long time.  Our thinking is the update for MS Update needs to be installed but we're not certain.  AV doesn't seem to be the cause.  Any ideas?

  • We have seen the same thing running for example initial update on a PC. The patches are already downloaded to the LAN cache but it still takes a lot of time to install them as it seems to wait between a few installs.

  • Not saying that there *isn't* something wrong, but just to relate a little more data. I just recently had to do some updates the "old fashion" way on a couple of 2008 R2 systems because they were not ones managed by our Kaseya system, and utilizing the windows update utility built into the OS, it took several hours to apply less than 20 updates and several times I thought perhaps the system had locked up but decided to just wait it out.  So perhaps, some of the fault lies in the updates themselves rather than Kaseya on this particular issue.  I know it seems like several of the .Net updates were the worst when I was monitoring the windows update process.
