If you have SSH enabled on the ESXi, you could create an scheduled event in KNM that do this for you once a day, needed or not, to maintain monitoring.

Yes, there is a setting to set a dependency monitor on group or device level, that monitor will be the dependency monitor for all monitors within the group/device.

Does the perfmon.exe application show any counters on the monitored machine ? IME when this happens, there is a slight chance that the performance registry is damaged and has to be rebuilt.
