KKB000855SYMPTOMSBackup failed - Unable to create volume snapshot - Failed to create volume snapshotCAUSEIf VSS option is selected using Schedule Volumes or Schedule Folders, Acronis uses Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) to create a snapshot of the system before the backup starts. This allows clean backup of database applications (such as MS SQL Server or Exchange) without having to stop and start the database. This error means the snapshot creation process failed, which can be caused by: -1) Microsoft VSS errors2) corruption of a database on one of the target disks (e.g. a Microsoft SQL database)3) Acronis disk driver error
4) insufficient temp drive space available to create snapshot
SOLUTIONPlease use this procedure for troubleshooting snapshot creation failure (please test the backup after each step to check if it resolves the issue): -1) go to Backup > Install/Remove and install the latest Acronis client build (10.0-18058 at the time of writing)2) ensure the "Volume Shadow Copy" service is enabled in Windows (it does not need to be started, but must be enabled)
4) if the Backup client machine is running SBS2011 with MS Sharepoint Foundation, update the Sharepoint databases using the PSConfig.exe tool as described here - http://kb.acronis.com/content/23359#5) install the latest Acronis disk drivers by downloading from here (select logging enabled during installation)6) check for free disk space on the drive where %TEMP% is located (usually C drive). If it has limited space available (e.g. less than 2Gb), refer to this Acronis article which describes how you can make more space available - http://kb.acronis.com/content/8032 (you can increase the size of the temporary file relative to free disk space, or move the temporary file to another partition with more free space. Please be aware that if you increase relative size, the backup will consume more temp file space during the backup and may impact performance of other running applications).FURTHER INVESTIGATIONIf the issue is unresolved, please submit the following data to Kaseya support for analyis: -
